Der Sandmann
Interdisiplinary Theater
Staatstheater Cottbus, Germany

The rain once it falls
Doesn't want to go away
So go my little hero
To a bloodless and burnt out place
- Chained to the Body

E. T. A. Hoffmann's horror fairy tale tells of the student Nathanael, who is haunted by a trauma from his childhood. A series of strange events occur that seem to have something to do with the death of Nathanael's father. The Sandman appears, sometimes as a demon, sometimes as an invention of Nathanael's child self. Nathanael seems to fall into madness, falls in love with a doll and ultimately brings his own life to a tragic end.
